Diebold Safe Company (Canton, Ohio, USA) Circa 1920, Automatic Design, no exterior combination lock. Exterior has only large wheel and gears to turn compression bar - for opening and closing air-tight. Interior has 3-movement time clock and spring-loaded bolt activating device. Procedure: Set each clock to at least one hour, use key to cock activating device, close door by turning large external wheel, bolts spring to lock position. After one hour has elapsed, bolts retract and door may be opened by turning the large wheel counter-clockwise.
Safe has two inner compartments. Top area has 1/2 "(1.3cm) thick door and low-security combination lock. Bottom area has 3" (7.6cm) thick door and high-security, explosive proof lock.
Both the interior and exterior doors have a crane hinge and compression bar (for extra support and air tight closing).
Measurements: Height: 4 '1 "(10.4cm), Width: 2' 5" (74cm) Depth: 2 '(5.1cm). Main (exterior) door thickness: 3 1/4 "(8.3cm) Side, bottom and top wall thickness: 3 5/8" (9.1cm). Overall weight: 7,000 lb. (3175 kg).
Safes of this design are categorized as "Money Safes" and have low storage space and low fire resistance but high resistance to burglary. A bank would normally position this is in a fireproof vault.
This is one of two Diebold Money Safes in this museum, The other is larger, weighs 1500 lbs. (680 kg) more, and is 10-15 years older. See the safe labelled "Larger Diebold" .
