Uniwersytet założono 18 grudnia 1820 pod nazwą The University of the State of Alabama, jednak inauguracyjne otwarcie miało miejsce 18 kwietnia 1831. Miesiąc później na uczelni studiowało 58 pierwszych studentów. Jesienią 2016 liczba studentów wynosiła 37 665[2]. W 2017 w rankingu najlepszych uniwersytetów w USA uczelnia uplasowała się na 103. pozycji.
Drużyny sportowe University of Alabama noszą nazwę Alabama Crimson Tide i występują w NCAA Division I. Najbardziej utytułowaną jest drużyna futbolu, która szesnaście razy zdobyła mistrzowski tytuł.
The University of Alabama (Alabama or UA) is a public research university located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States, and the flagship of the University of Alabama System. Established in 1820, the University of Alabama (UA) is the oldest and largest of the public universities in Alabama. The university offers programs of study in 13 academic divisions leading to bachelor's, master's, Education Specialist, and doctoral degrees. The only publicly supported law school in the state is at UA. Other academic programs unavailable elsewhere in Alabama include doctoral programs in anthropology, communication and information sciences, metallurgical engineering, music, Romance languages, and social work.

The University of Alabama has consistently been ranked as one of the top 50 public universities in the nation by the U.S. News & World Report.In addition, The University of Alabama has produced a total of 51 Goldwater Scholars, 15 Rhodes Scholars, 16 Truman Scholars, 32 Hollings Scholars and 11 Boren Scholars.
